Your Whistle Stop For Breakfast, Lunch Or Dinner
Restaurant Type: American
There aren’t a lot of places that I can recommend for a tasty breakfast (brunch), lunch and dinner, but La Grande Orange Cafe in Pasadena is one. On this particular weekend, Tracy and I ate back to back meals here; Saturday night (just the two of us) for dinner and Sunday morning with friends for breakfast/brunch. I felt my belt expanding for eight consecutive hours.
When Tracy and I come here alone, we like to sit at one of the tables in the Otis Bar because there is usually some sporting event on television. Oh yeah, they also make some good drinks, too. Not usually a Sangria person, Tracy says she likes it here, while I usually stick to one of the various martini varieties they pour. The Shaken Lemonade (vodka and fresh lemonade shaken with a sprig of rosemary) is pretty tasty on a hot day.
La Grande Orange Cafe is situated in Pasadena’s old Del Mar Train Station, and the metro stop lets you out right at the back entrance to the restaurant.
It’s tough to pass up the Deviled Eggs at La Grande Orange as an appetizer. You either get three eggs for $4 or six eggs for $7. To say they are addicting is an understatement. And for good measure, you can get them with crumbled bacon. Delicious!!!
La Grande Orange Cafe offers a somewhat limited, but delicious menu. Here are some of our favorites for lunch/dinner (same menu).
Short Rib Tacos (Chef’s favorite with pico de gallo) ($20)
Ribeye Steak Tacos (mesquite-grilled, medium rare) ($22 – $26 if with filet mignon)
Brussels Sprout Salad with aged manchego, dried berries, smoked almonds and honey-mustard vinaigrette, bacon ($15).
Next time I am going to try the Roast Prime Rib Of Beef with mashed potatoes, vegetables and classic horseradish ($24) or “The Duke” Filet Mignon, black Angus beef, hand cut with mashed potatoes and veggies ($27)
Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with blueberry compote and natural maple syrup ($13)
Prime Rib Hash, Santa Fe RR Classic – chopped prime rib, potato, onion, over easy egg ($16)
Ana’s Huevos Rancheros, Los favoritos de Jorge ($15)
Chilaquiles, baked tortillas, chicken, cheese, eggs, jalapeños, ranchero sauce, salsa verde ($15)
And no matter what meal we have here, I always top it off with a giant piece of their delectable Red Velvet Cake with Vanilla Gelato ($8). It is spectacular!
As you can see, the dress code is casual.
