Baba Ghanouj – Long Beach, CA

A Taste Of Lebanon

P1040515Baba Ghanouj – Long Beach, CA

Restaurant Type: Lebanese

Tracy and I made the trek down to our former home town of Long Beach to meet up with friends, Richard, Liz, Craig and Julie for a night out on the town. Our destination for the evening was Baba Ghanouj, a Lebanese restaurant located on Atlantic Avenue in the Bixby Knolls area.

On the restaurant website it said that owner and chef George Mitri has been a restaurateur in Long Beach for more thirty years. He was born and raised in Lebanon, so he opened Baba Ghanouj in 2009. The decor, not surprisingly, is very Middle Eastern.

Locals Richard and Liz had dines here before, and they told us he portions were big so we might not need to order an appetizer. However, the menu had one item I wanted to try, so I ordered the Sautéed Potatoes with Garlic, Lemon, Chili, Cilantro and Tahini ($4.95). I was so hungry that I forgot to take a photo of the dish until I was about half way through the dish.

For the most part, the main dishes were good to very good, with one exception.

Tracy and Liz enjoyed their Shrimp on a Skewer, Four Large Shrimp marinated in Garlic, Lemon and Olive Oil, charbroiled with the Shell on….served with Basmati Rice, Garlic Sauce, Hummus, Broiled Tomato and Pepper ($19.95).

I opted for the Lamb Shish Kabab, marinated pieces of Lamb, charbroiled and served with
Basmati Rice, Hummus, Broiled Tomato and Pepper ($17.95). It was very good.

Craig went healthy and ordered the Vegetarian Combo, three Falafel, Tabouli, Hummus, Baba Ghanouj, 2 Grape Leaves, Olives, one Spinach Fatayer, served with Tahini and Pita Chips ($14.95).

Richard ordered a special sausage dish that looked like it could be served at a Lebanese Oktoberfest.

The only thumbs down review was Julie’s traditional Lebanese dish: Kibbi be Sineeya, freshly Ground Lamb kneaded together with Cracked Wheat skillfully layered with Lamb and Pine  Nuts, baked, and served with Basmati Rice, Tabouli, Yogurt and a broiled Tomato and Pepper ($9.50).

shapeimage_12     All in all, it was a good meal, and although we had heard that the service was slow at Baba Ghanouj, our server was helpful and very prompt in getting the dishes out in a timely manner.

P1040516I wish this restaurant had been around when we lived in Long Beach, because if it was closer, as you can see by our smiling faces, we definitely would return.
