Tracy and I had been looking forward to celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in Paris in September 2014.  However, an airline strike, a hotel snafu, an unwelcome visitor to our Marais apartment and a…well, come along on our journey, and read all about what turned a romantic two weeks into something substantially less.  However, we were in Paris, so it couldn’t be all bad!

Chapter One: Something Doesn’t Smell Right Here

Chapter One: Something Doesn’t Smell Right Here Flying at roughly 36,000 feet above Greenland, with an oxygen mask covering a good portion of my face for the better (or worse) part of two hours, as Tracy and I sat in the galley of an Air Tahiti Nui flight from Paris bound back to Los Angeles, two thoughts quickly came to mind. First, “Will I survive the flight?” and secondly, “If I do, will the passengers seated near us kill me before we arrive?”    I was suddenly the guy on the plane I hated most…“the damned sick guy!”  Not just another pretty face, eh? The situation looked fairly grim.  On the plus side, the legroom in the galley was much … Read more…

We had a great night’s sleep (very comfy bed). We utilized the Meliá Vendôme’s spacious bathroom, which has a very good shower (something I find quite important in a hotel). There was one more surprise. … Read more…

Chapter Six: Journées du Patrimoine

Chapter Six: Journées du Patrimoine DAY SIX: You Can Fight City Hall (Crowds), A Royal Visit, Smoke Free Dining, Monet Monet, The Path Of Kahn, Crazy Spokesman, Cheese Please, Not You Again, Muscat Love and The Best Meal we Had In Paris Our Saturday would turn out to be the busiest day in Paris and include a place I had long wanted to step inside but never had the opportunity, a royal palace, a museum that makes quite an impression, plus a garden I had just recently read about that’s located on the outskirts of town.  Oh yeah…we’d end the day by dining at what turned out to be our favorite restaurant in Paris. So much for that relaxing Anniversary … Read more…

Luckily our corner patisserie had coffee and croissants (plus a delectable petite beignet avec framboise) waiting for us at 7:45, and after gorging ourselves we started the trek across the river to Le Palais du Luxembourg.  This palace was constructed for Louis XIII’s mom (and widow of Henry IV), Marie de Médicis.  This was another Journées du Patrimoine sight that I had really … Read more…

Chapter Eight: That Was The Week That Wasn’t DAY EIGHT – Cough Till I Drop, Drug Run, Camille Is The Deal, Turn For The Worse, Is There A Doctor In The House, 50…No 70…No 90 Euros, Cancellation and The Power Of Pringles Well, we really didn’t need the light of day to know this was going to be a bad day. I woke up at 2 a.m. with a cough that wouldn’t stop. I’m sure by 6 a.m. everyone else in the apartment complex was harkening back to the good old days when they just had to put up with the wails coming from Dennis.  Tracy, on the other hand, was contemplating methods of snuffing me out with a pillow. … Read more…

Chapter Nine: Trying To Make The Best Of It

Chapter Nine: Trying To Make The Best Of It Day Ten – Barely Hanging In There, The Late Afternoon Is A Little Rosier(s) and Not Ricky St-Gervais This turned out to be our worst full day in Paris (you’ll notice I didn’t say it was “THE worst day of the trip,” because that didn’t happen for a couple of more days). First of all, I was up all night. Unfortunately, unlike home where I can be banished to all corners of the house, a small apartment afforded Tracy no respite from my coughing onslaught. On Wednesday morning, instead of a sight for sore eyes, we were a sight with sore eyes. My temperature was up, and the coughing was non-stop … Read more…
