Going Green

P1020416Green Street Tavern – Pasadena, CA

Restaurant Type: American

Green Street Tavern has been a “go-to” restaurant for Tracy and me for more than a year. The food has always been good here, but the service at our last dinner dropped their “maitai” rating for now. But as I said, we have never been disappointed in one of its meals, so that’s what I will concentrate on for this little review.

Entering Green Street Tavern, you walk into a smaller room that has a few tables and a small bar (beer and wine only). We’ve dined in this are and it is definitely quieter than the main dining room (photo from restaurant website).

shapeimage_3We were led into the main dining room (city of Pasadena website photo).  When the room is full, the noise is energetic, but not too loud…just the kind of place I like.

P1040438On a previous visit, we have started with their Signature Conquistador Bisque, salted cod, chorizo, garlic crouton, rouille, manchego ($8).

P1040437On this evening, we were dining with friends Kevin and Melissa along with Northern California friends, Tom and Martha.  At first the service was personable and fast as our knowledgeable wine server went over the various choices. opened with Miniature Baked Brie, almond-encrusted, roast garlic, honey-roasted fig compote, herb baguette ($14.00…to share with the table). It was excellent.

P1020402Also good was the Crispy calamari, sweet and spicy jalapeño gelee, pasilla chili coulis ($12…also to be shared by the table).

P1020401

We’ve enjoyed a few salads, too (hey we have to eat veggies sometimes). They run about $10 or $11.

P1040452Entrées included some really good meat dishes….

P1020406such as Filet Mignon, 6 oz, celery root gratin, pea tendrils, fried onions, demi ($24) to Short Ribs braised, orzo goat cheese “Mac n’ Cheese”, garlic green beans, a jus ($19).

P1040443If fish is your thing they have a nice Salmon with grilled, herb polenta, oyster mushrooms, sofrito sauce ($19).

P1040454

I’ve had a couple of great desserts here (I am the group’s designated dessert guy). This last time I tried White Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding with blueberry and white chocolate sauce ($8). It was out of this world.

P1020416The last time I had dined her I had an equally good flourless chocolate cake with gelato ($8).

P1040461Our problem on the last visit was the extremely slow service. Many customers who came in after us were served first…and it was a long wait.

P1020413So we will return, but I hope they improve the service, because there is no dearth of restaurants we are willing to try.

P1020414MaiTaiTom Rating Food + Ambiance + Value = 3.9 maitais (out of 5)
